Administrative Rules
1. Wood and Brook Sportsman's Club, Inc. is located in a populated semi-rural area, with residential and commercial buildings and their occupants located within sight and sound of the ranges. Because of their close proximity, buildings, their occupants, pedestrians, farm animals on nearby property can easily be struck by carelessly fired rounds. Shooters are personally responsible for gun safety while on the range, and can be held personally liable for any injuries or damage caused by their careless use of a firearm. It is every shooter's responsibility to know and comply with all range rules. Failure to do so may result in expulsion from the range and termination of club membership.
2. Wood and Brook property, its facilities, ranges and range equipment are reserved exclusively for use by its members and their guests. Anyone claiming guest status must be accompanied by their member host. No unauthorized use of Club facilities is permitted. Trespassers will be prosecuted.
3. Users of Club facilities must be able to famish definitive proof of current membership or guest status at all times when on Club property.
4. Except in those instances in which target materials are famished by the Club as part of an organized competitive event, shooters must supply, retrieve and discard their own target materials. Human silhouette targets are prohibited.
5. Unless specifically authorized by the Club, no shooting may occur before 8AM weekdays or 10AM on Sundays, or after sundown. In those locations where adequate artificial lighting is present, shooting may continue until no later than 10PM.
6. Scheduled events shall take precedence over unscheduled "drop-in" shooting, and no “drop-in" shooting is permitted when participants in other activities already underway might be in danger of injury. Ranges may be reserved for scheduled events with the Club's Calendar Chairman.
7. Alcoholic beverages or mind altering drugs are strictly prohibited on the ranges, as are shooters judged to be under the influence of these substances.
8. Willful destruction or unauthorized alteration of range equipment or facilities is strictly prohibited.
9. A "shooting in Progress" flag MUST be displayed in the location specified at all times when any shooting activity is taking place. This includes organized Club events and "drop in" shooting by members and their guests. All shooters are personally responsible to be certain the "shooting” flag is displayed.
10. Range guests must be personally accompanied by their member hosts at all times when on Club property.
Gun Handling Rules
1. Weapons must remain unloaded at aII times except when die shooter is in position on the shooting line ready to fire, and muzzles must ALWAYS be pointed down-range.
2. When benched, stacked, being carried onto or off the range, or when otherwise being handled, the action of every firearm must be kept open at all times, except when on the shooting line ready to fire.
3. Be certain that the target line, impact area, and adjacent areas are clear of others before loading your weapon. Firearms may not be "shouldered" at any time in the Club house, or at any other time when loaded except when on a firing line.
General Range Rules
1. Know and obey all range rules and commands.
2. Alcoholic beverages and mind altering drugs are not allowed on the ranges, nor are shooters judged to be under the influence of these substances.
3. Shooters must retrieve their brass and other materials expended during firing, place all trash in appropriate receptacles, and leave the range in equal or better condition than it was when they arrived.
4. Wood and Brook Sportsman's Club strongly recommends that all persons on any shooting range, including shooters. Range Officers, target attendants, and trap personnel wear eye and ear protection at all times during live firing.
Rifle Range Rules
1. No weapon may be loaded or fired if any person is located down-range of the nearest firing line.
2. Fixed target materials such as iron, steel, concrete, brick, block, or other materials which may cause fired rounds to ricochet are strictly prohibited. Only soft, energy absorbing target materials, or metallic silhouette targets which are hinged from the top maybe used. Jacketed ammunition is prohibited when shooting at metallic silhouette targets.
3. AII target materials must be retrieved and placed in trash receptacles provided at the conclusion of the shooting activity. Paper and other burnable materials should be burned in the steel barrel provided.
4. Targets must be located between the round poles on either side of the target line so that fired rounds are stopped by the earth berm behind the line. Muzzles may not be elevated above a line whose trajectory will result in a fired round flying over and. beyond the earth berm backstop. Shooters deliberately firing over or to the left or right of the berm are subject to immediate ejection from the range and expulsion from the Club.
5. Armor piercing ammunition is strictly prohibited at all times.
6. Smoking is prohibited within 15 feet of any black powder shooter, or any open supply of loose black or smokeless powder.
7. Shooting benches displaced for the convenience of any shooters must be replaced in their original location at the conclusion of the activity.
8. Shooters may not shoot at distances beyond 200 yards without prior approval of the Shooting Committee Chair or Range Officer. "Long range" days controlled by a range Officers maybe scheduled for open shooting by request of the members.
9. Range users must sign, date, and note their "time in" and "time out" in the Range Use Log Book located in the shelter at the left rear of the range.
Range Officers
Although Range Officers (RO) shalt not interfere with the competitive or organizational aspects of a shooting event, when one is present, he shall have absolute control over the safety of shooting activities on the range, and no weapon maybe fired until the Range Officers determines that the range is clear. If, in his judgement range safety is compromised, the Range Officer may temporarily halt shooting until safety issues are resolved. The Range Officers shall have the authority to bar and/or eject anyone from the range who refuses to comply with range rule and/or his reasonable request. He shall patrol the firing line to assure compliance with safety rules, and shall warn or advise shooters of any violation of range safety. He shall report any/all safety violation incidents to the Shooting Committee. Board of Directors. Club officers and membership. Reports of serious violations and those resulting in the expulsion of a shooter from the range must be made in writing. Range Officers are elected by the membership, and granted authority as described in this section by the Board of Directors. Range Officers must be clearly identified by a distinctive device worn at all times while officiating at an event. An officiating RO may not participate in the event at when he is the designated RO.
Compliance
This Shooting Safety Plan is established to assure the safety of shooting activities conducted on Wood and Brook Sportsman's Club ranges, and to ensure the continued existence of the Club itself. Members are responsible to know and comply with these and all other rules of the Club. Violation of these rules will result on the offender's ejection from the range, and may result in expulsion from the Club.
Amendments
This Safety Plan was approved by the Board of Directors on March 23, 1998 and distributed to the general membership during April, 1998. It will be reviewed or amended at least annually. Members will be informed of any such amendments.
